What is professional fluoride treatment?
Professional fluoride is a concentrated mineral treatment applied to your teeth at the end of a cleaning. It's significantly stronger than anything in your toothpaste or tap water — designed to remineralize weakened enamel, reverse the earliest stages of decay, and create a more resistant surface against the acids that cause cavities. At Roanoke Dental Center, we offer fluoride as part of routine preventive care for patients of every age.
Who benefits most?
- Children and teenagers with developing teeth — fluoride strengthens enamel as it matures.
- Adults with a history of cavities or high cavity risk.
- Patients with dry mouth (from medications, medical conditions, or mouth breathing) — saliva is your natural defense against decay, and fluoride fills the gap when it's reduced.
- Patients with exposed root surfaces from gum recession.
- Anyone wearing braces or clear aligners — brackets and trays create hard-to-clean areas where decay loves to start.
What it feels like
A fluoride treatment takes about one minute. Your hygienist paints a thin varnish directly onto your teeth — it sets almost instantly, has a mild flavor, and you can eat and drink shortly afterward. There are no trays to bite down on and no rinses to hold. Kids tolerate it easily, and adults barely notice it.
How often?
For most patients, fluoride is applied at every six-month cleaning. Patients with higher cavity risk may benefit from applications every three to four months. Dr. Willis will recommend the right schedule based on your individual needs.
Fluoride and the Roanoke Valley community
Cave Spring and many surrounding Roanoke County communities benefit from fluoridated public water — but not every household is on public water. If you're on a private well, professional fluoride treatments become even more important for your family's dental health. Ask us about supplemental fluoride options for children in homes without fluoridated water.
Fluoride treatment is included in most Virginia Dental Club memberships and covered by the majority of dental insurance plans. Learn more about our full general dentistry services or schedule your next cleaning.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is fluoride treatment safe for children?+
Yes. Professional fluoride has been used in dentistry for decades and is endorsed by the American Dental Association. The amount applied is carefully controlled and the varnish is designed to stay on the teeth, not be swallowed.
Does fluoride treatment hurt?+
Not at all. Your hygienist paints a thin varnish onto your teeth — it takes about a minute, sets almost instantly, and has a mild flavor. There are no trays or rinses involved.
How soon can I eat or drink after fluoride?+
You can eat and drink shortly after treatment. We recommend waiting about 30 minutes and avoiding very hot foods or drinks to let the varnish fully absorb into the enamel.
Do adults need fluoride treatment too?+
Many adults benefit from professional fluoride, especially those with a history of cavities, dry mouth, exposed root surfaces, or gum recession. Dr. Willis will recommend it if your teeth could use the extra protection.
Is fluoride covered by insurance?+
Most dental insurance plans cover fluoride for children. Adult coverage varies by plan. Fluoride is also included in Virginia Dental Club memberships at our Cave Spring offices.
What if my family is on well water without fluoride?+
Professional fluoride treatments become even more important if your household doesn't have fluoridated water. Ask us about supplemental fluoride options for children in homes on private wells.
