Long-Term Tooth Replacement

Dental Implants

The closest thing modern dentistry has to a real tooth — built to last, feel natural, and let you forget it's even there.

How implants work

A dental implant replaces a missing tooth from the root up. A titanium post is gently placed into the jawbone, where it fuses with the bone over time — a process called osseointegration that typically takes three to six months. Once the foundation is secure, a custom crown is placed on top — matched to the size, shape, and color of your surrounding teeth. The result is a replacement that looks, feels, and functions like the tooth you lost.

Why we recommend them

  • They feel and function like your natural teeth.
  • They protect the jawbone from the shrinkage that follows tooth loss.
  • They don't require grinding down healthy neighbors the way a bridge does.
  • With proper care, they can last a lifetime.
  • They let you eat, speak, and smile without thinking twice.

The implant process timeline

From consultation to final crown, the implant process at our Cave Spring office typically spans four to seven months. Here's what to expect:

  • Consultation and imaging — Dr. Perry examines the area, takes 3D scans, and discusses your options. This is where we assess bone density and plan the placement.
  • Implant placement — The titanium post is placed into the jawbone under local anesthesia. Most patients are surprised at how comfortable the procedure is. Sedation is available for anyone who needs it.
  • Healing period— The bone integrates with the implant over three to six months. During this time, you'll wear a temporary restoration so you're never without a tooth.
  • Final crown— Once the implant is fully stable, we place a permanent, custom-crafted crown. You'll leave our Cave Spring office with a tooth that blends right in.

Implant-supported dentures

For patients missing most or all of their teeth, implant-supported dentures offer a life-changing improvement over traditional removable dentures. Instead of relying on adhesive or suction, the denture snaps securely onto two to four implants placed in the jaw. The result is a stable, comfortable fit that lets you eat the foods you love and speak clearly without worrying about slipping. Visit our dentures page to compare your options.

Bone grafting and candidacy

Not every patient has enough bone to support an implant right away. When a tooth has been missing for a while, the jawbone in that area can thin out. In those cases, a bone graft — a straightforward procedure that encourages new bone growth — can rebuild the foundation needed for a successful implant. Dr. Perry will be upfront with you about whether grafting is needed and what it adds to the timeline. Most patients in the Roanoke Valley who want implants can get them — it's just a matter of proper planning.

Is an implant right for you?

Most healthy adults are candidates, but not always immediately. We do a thorough exam, 3D imaging when appropriate, and an honest conversation about bone density, timing, and alternatives. Patients with uncontrolled diabetes, heavy smokers, or those undergoing certain medical treatments may need additional evaluation. For some patients, a bridge or a partial is a better fit — we'll tell you if that's the case. Explore all your options on our restorative dentistry page.

What it costs

Every implant case is a little different. We'll walk you through insurance coverage, financing options, and the Virginia Dental Club discount before we start. No surprise bills. Many dental insurance plans now cover a portion of implant treatment, and we'll help you maximize your benefits. For Roanoke County families weighing the investment, keep in mind that implants often cost less over a lifetime than repeatedly replacing bridges or dentures.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do dental implants last?+

With good oral hygiene and regular checkups at our Cave Spring offices, the titanium post can last a lifetime. The crown on top typically lasts fifteen to twenty-five years before it may need replacement — far longer than a bridge or denture.

Is the implant procedure painful?+

Most patients are surprised at how comfortable it is. We use local anesthesia for every placement, and sedation options are available if you feel anxious. Many people compare the recovery to a routine extraction — over-the-counter pain relief is usually all you need.

How much do dental implants cost in the Roanoke Valley?+

Every case is different, so we provide a detailed estimate after your consultation. Many dental insurance plans now cover a portion of implant treatment, and we offer financing options. Over a lifetime, implants often cost less than repeatedly replacing bridges or dentures.

Am I too old for dental implants?+

Age alone doesn't disqualify you. What matters is your overall health and jawbone density. We've placed implants for patients well into their eighties at our Roanoke, VA practice. Dr. Perry will give you an honest assessment during your consultation.

What if I don't have enough bone for an implant?+

Bone grafting is a common, straightforward procedure that rebuilds the foundation your implant needs. It adds a few months to the timeline, but it allows patients who were previously told they weren't candidates to receive implants successfully.

Can I get an implant the same day a tooth is pulled?+

In some cases, yes. Same-day or immediate implants can be placed right after extraction when conditions are right — healthy bone, no infection, and a stable site. Dr. Perry will let you know if this approach works for your situation during your consultation.
