Laughing Gas
Nitrous Oxide Sedation
A gentle, fast-acting sedation option that takes the edge off dental anxiety — without putting you to sleep.
Reviewed by our dentists — Updated April 2026
What is it?
Nitrous oxide — often called “laughing gas” — is a safe, inhaled sedative mixed with oxygen and delivered through a small mask over your nose. It produces a calm, relaxed, slightly floaty feeling that helps anxious patients get through cleanings, fillings, and other routine procedures without stress.
Who is it for?
- Patients with mild to moderate dental anxiety
- Patients with a sensitive gag reflex
- Patients who've had bad experiences with dentists in the past
- Kids and teens who need help staying calm in the chair
- Anyone who just wants a more relaxed visit
What does it feel like?
Most patients describe a warm, tingly, light feeling. You're awake, aware, and can respond to our team — but you're noticeably calmer. Time often feels like it passes more quickly.
How safe is it?
Nitrous oxide has been used in dentistry for over 150 years and has an excellent safety record. It's metabolized and cleared from your system within minutes of turning the gas off, which means most patients can drive themselves home from the appointment.
Is it right for you?
We'll ask a few questions about your medical history before using nitrous oxide. Most healthy adults and children are great candidates. If nitrous isn't the right fit, we also offer oral sedation for patients who need a deeper level of relaxation.
Just tell us when you book: “I'd like to try nitrous.” That's it. We'll take care of the rest.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does nitrous oxide feel like?+
Most patients describe a warm, tingly, light feeling. You're awake and aware the entire time — just noticeably calmer. Time often feels like it passes more quickly.
How quickly does nitrous oxide wear off?+
Within minutes of turning the gas off, the effects are gone. Most patients feel completely normal and can drive themselves home right after the appointment.
Can children use nitrous oxide?+
Yes. Nitrous oxide is safe and effective for kids and teens who need help staying calm in the dental chair. It's one of the most commonly used sedation options in pediatric dentistry.

Can I request nitrous for any procedure?+
Yes — nitrous is available for cleanings, fillings, and most other routine procedures. Just mention it when you book your appointment or let us know when you arrive.
What if nitrous oxide isn't enough for my anxiety?+
If you need a deeper level of relaxation, we also offer oral sedation. Dr. Willis will help you decide which option is the best fit based on your anxiety level and the procedure you need.
