Jaw Pain

Your jaw joint works every time you talk, chew, or yawn. When it starts complaining, the cause is usually one of a few fixable things.

What jaw pain might mean

  • Clenching and grinding. Hours of overnight muscle work leave the jaw sore, tight, and headache-prone by morning. This is the most common cause we see.
  • TMJ dysfunction. The joint just in front of your ear can become inflamed or move unevenly, producing clicking, catching, or pain with wide opening.
  • A tooth problem in disguise. Cracked molars, deep decay, and pushy wisdom teeth all refer pain into the jaw convincingly.
  • Muscle strain and stress. Long dental appointments, gum-chewing habits, and tense weeks all show up in the same muscles.

Self-care today

Put the jaw on light duty: softer foods, smaller bites, no gum, and no resting your chin on your hand. Moist heat, a warm washcloth for ten minutes a couple of times a day, relaxes the muscles. During the day, practice the resting position: lips together, teeth apart, tongue on the roof of the mouth. If you catch your teeth touching while you concentrate, that is daytime clenching, and noticing it is half the fix.

When to call promptly

Call the same day if the jaw locks, if pain follows a blow or a fall, or if swelling or fever arrives with it. Book an exam soon if pain has lasted more than a week or two, if clicking now comes with discomfort, or if morning headaches are becoming routine. Sudden jaw pain with chest pressure or shortness of breath is a 911 call, full stop.

How we evaluate and treat it

We start by ruling the teeth in or out with an exam and imaging, including CBCT 3D imaging at both offices when the picture is unclear. If the joint and muscles are the story, our TMJ and TMD treatment is conservative: custom night guards, bite refinement, and habit coaching. Because heavy grinding sometimes travels with snoring and poor sleep, we also screen for sleep apnea when the signs line up, and our teeth grinding guide covers that side of the problem in depth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is jaw clicking by itself something to worry about?+

A painless click that has been there for years is usually just how your joint moves, and many people have one. The combination to watch for is clicking plus pain, a jaw that catches or locks, or a click that is new and getting louder. Those are worth an evaluation.

Why does my jaw hurt most in the morning?+

Morning jaw pain is the signature of overnight clenching or grinding. Your jaw muscles have effectively done a workout while you slept. Morning headaches around the temples and teeth that look flatter at the edges often travel with it. A properly fitted night guard usually breaks the cycle.

Could my jaw pain actually be a tooth problem?+

Yes, and this is why an exam beats guessing. An infected or cracked molar can refer pain along the jaw, and a wisdom tooth pushing sideways can ache in ways that feel muscular. We check the teeth first, because treating a joint for a tooth problem helps no one.

When is jaw pain urgent?+

If your jaw locks open or closed, if pain follows an injury, or if swelling and fever come with it, call the same day. And if jaw pain arrives suddenly with chest pressure, shortness of breath, or arm discomfort, treat it as a possible heart emergency and call 911, not the dentist.

What does TMJ treatment look like at Roanoke Dental Center?+

Conservative first. Most patients improve with a custom night guard, habit coaching, and small bite adjustments. We reserve anything more involved for cases that truly need it, and we tell you honestly which category you are in after the exam.
