For Our Neighbors

A Dental Home Away From Home

Between Hollins, Roanoke College, and the VTC med school, this valley is full of students whose dentist is hundreds of miles away. Borrow ours for a few years.

The student dental problem, solved locally

College has a way of exposing the gap between having a dentist and having a dentist nearby. The one back home knows your whole chart; the one you need is the one who can see you before Thursday. We fill that gap for students across the valley, from Hollins University up north of the city, Roanoke College over in Salem, and the Virginia Tech Carilion medical students down in the Riverside district. No affiliation with any campus, just neighbors, two offices, and a front desk that understands semester logistics.

What students actually book

The workhorse visit is the cleaning and exam your parents keep texting about, done here so winter break stays a vacation. After that, reality: fillings for cavities that ambushed a semester of vending-machine dinners, urgent repairs for intramural collisions and popcorn betrayals, and Invisalign for students who want graduation photos with straighter teeth than their student ID. Whitening spikes reliably before interview season.

Wisdom teeth, without the sales pitch

The classic campus dental crisis is a wisdom tooth choosing midterms to erupt. Here is our honest framing: we evaluate wisdom teeth in-house with CBCT 3D imaging, we manage flare-ups and handle some extractions ourselves, and we refer complex impactions to trusted local oral surgeons rather than stretching past our lane. You get a straight answer about which category your tooth is in, what it should cost, and whether it can safely wait for a break when the home dentist can weigh in.

Logistics for people with syllabi

Records from your home dentist transfer with one signed release, and we send everything back the same way when you graduate. Appointments run Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM, which pairs well with a class schedule, and phones are answered 24 hours a day by our smart answering system. Parents can call either office directly, we are used to it, and the payments page covers insurance, CareCredit, and the Virginia Dental Club for the uninsured. Nitrous oxide is available for the dental-anxious, med students included.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Roanoke Dental Center affiliated with Hollins, Roanoke College, or Virginia Tech Carilion?+

No. We are an independent local practice with no formal ties to any campus, no affiliation, just neighbors. Students find us the usual ways: a roommate's recommendation, a parent's phone call, or a toothache with terrible timing.

Can my parents handle the billing from out of town?+

Yes. With your permission, we can discuss treatment and costs with a parent, take their payment over the phone, and send them the paperwork their insurance needs. Plenty of our student visits are booked by a parent two states away, and the system works smoothly.

Do you remove wisdom teeth?+

Honestly: it depends on the tooth. We evaluate wisdom teeth in-house with an exam and CBCT 3D imaging, and we handle some extractions ourselves. Complex impactions, teeth wrapped near nerves or deep in bone, are referred to trusted local oral surgeons, because that is where they belong. Either way, you leave with a clear picture and a plan, not a runaround.

Can I do Invisalign here if I will graduate before it finishes?+

Often, yes. Invisalign check-ins are spaced out enough that treatment can continue through breaks, and if you leave the area for good we help transfer your case to a provider wherever you land. We map that plan honestly before you commit a dollar.

What if I crack a tooth during finals week?+

Call immediately, phones are answered 24 hours a day by our smart answering system. Same-day or next-morning slots are typical for urgent problems during clinical hours, Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM. We have repaired plenty of teeth between exams; bring your flashcards to the waiting room.
