Deeper Relaxation

Oral Sedation

For patients with severe dental anxiety, oral sedation offers a deeper level of relaxation — without needles, IVs, or general anesthesia.

What is oral sedation?

Oral sedation is a prescribed medication — usually a small pill — that you take about an hour before your appointment. By the time you're in the chair, you'll feel deeply relaxed, often drowsy, and for many patients the procedure passes in what feels like a few short minutes.

How it's different from nitrous oxide

  • Deeper sedation: Oral sedation is a step up from nitrous in both duration and strength.
  • Longer lasting: The effects last for several hours, which is ideal for longer appointments.
  • Memory fade:Many patients don't remember much of the procedure — which for severe anxiety can be a gift.
  • You need a ride:Because the medication lingers, you'll need someone to drive you home and stay with you for a few hours afterward.

Who benefits most?

  • Patients with severe dental anxiety or phobia
  • Patients who need longer or more complex procedures
  • Patients who haven't seen a dentist in years because of fear
  • Patients with strong gag reflexes nitrous hasn't solved
  • Patients with a history of traumatic dental experiences

Is it safe?

Oral sedation is considered very safe for most healthy adults. We carefully review your medical history, current medications, and health conditions before prescribing anything. During your visit, your vital signs are monitored throughout the appointment.

What to expect on appointment day

  • Take the medication at home, about an hour before your appointment.
  • Have a driver bring you to the office and plan to drive you home.
  • You'll feel relaxed, possibly drowsy, but still able to respond to our team.
  • Afterward, rest at home — no driving or operating machinery for the rest of the day.

Tell us: “I'm extremely anxious about the dentist.” We'll build your visit around you — including oral sedation if it's the right fit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be completely unconscious with oral sedation?+

No. Oral sedation makes you deeply relaxed and often drowsy, but you remain conscious and can respond to our team. It's not general anesthesia — there are no IVs and no intubation.

Will I remember the procedure?+

Many patients don't remember much of the appointment afterward. For people with severe dental anxiety, this partial memory fade can make a big difference in their willingness to get the care they need.

How do I prepare for an oral sedation appointment?+

Take the prescribed medication about an hour before your appointment. Arrange for someone to drive you to and from the office. Plan to rest at home afterward — no driving or operating machinery for the rest of the day.

Is oral sedation safe?+

Yes, for most healthy adults. We carefully review your medical history and current medications before prescribing anything. Your vital signs are monitored throughout the entire appointment.

How is oral sedation different from nitrous oxide?+

Oral sedation is a step up in both strength and duration. It lasts longer, provides deeper relaxation, and often results in partial memory loss. Unlike nitrous, it requires a ride home because the effects linger for several hours.

Can I ask about oral sedation for a regular cleaning?+

Yes. If anxiety has kept you from the dentist, oral sedation can be used for any procedure — including routine cleanings. Just let us know when you call and we'll set everything up.
