The Dental Implant Procedure

Your first visit: consultation and planning

Every implant case at Roanoke Dental Center begins with a comprehensive evaluation. Dr. Willis will examine the area where the tooth is missing, review your medical history, and take detailed 3D images using our cone beam CT scanner. These images give us a precise map of your jawbone density, nerve pathways, and sinus position — the information we need to plan a safe, accurate placement. You'll leave this appointment with a clear understanding of your timeline, costs, and options.

Step one: implant placement

On the day of surgery, the area is numbed with local anesthesia. For patients who feel anxious, we offer sedation options ranging from nitrous oxide to oral conscious sedation — so you can be as relaxed as you need to be. Dr. Willis makes a small opening in the gum tissue and precisely positions the titanium implant post into the jawbone using the surgical plan developed from your 3D scans. The incision is closed with a few sutures, and a temporary restoration or healing cap is placed over the site. Most patients describe the discomfort afterward as less than they expected — comparable to a routine extraction.

Step two: osseointegration — the healing phase

Over the next three to six months, the titanium post gradually fuses with your natural bone in a process called osseointegration. This is what gives implants their remarkable stability — the post literally becomes part of your jaw. During this time you'll wear a temporary crown or bridge so you're never without a tooth. We schedule check-in visits at our Cave Spring offices to monitor healing and make sure everything is progressing on track.

Step three: abutment placement

Once the implant has fully integrated, a small connector called an abutment is attached to the top of the post. This is a brief appointment — typically just local anesthesia and a few minutes of work. The abutment serves as the anchor point for your permanent crown. We'll take impressions or digital scans at this visit so the lab can fabricate a crown that matches your natural teeth in shape, size, and color.

Step four: final crown placement

About two to three weeks after abutment placement, you'll return for the final step. Dr. Willis seats the custom-crafted crown onto the abutment, checks your bite, and makes any minor adjustments. The result is a tooth that blends seamlessly with the rest of your smile. Most patients in the Roanoke Valley who receive implants tell us they forget which tooth is the replacement.

Anesthesia and sedation options

Comfort is a priority throughout the implant process. Every surgical step is performed under local anesthesia at minimum. For patients who experience dental anxiety or are undergoing more extensive procedures like All-on-4 full-arch placement, we offer nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation. Dr. Willis will discuss which option is right for you during your consultation.

Recovery and aftercare

Post-surgical instructions are straightforward: soft foods for a few days, gentle brushing around the site, and over-the-counter pain relief as needed. Most patients return to normal activities within a day or two.
